Nawratil was a superb landscape painter, but most of his work focussed on still lifes and figurative paintings and sketches. In his paintings there is a mixing of various styles of sketches, which gets to the point of impressionism. His small landscape paintings, still lifes, and paintings from everyday life are outstanding for their picturesque and free plasticity of form and rich coloration. Nawrátil became the founder of the school of realism in 19th-century Czech art.
