AUCTION OF SELECTED ARTWORKS - EXPO 58 ART EXHIBITION HALL - SATURDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2021 FROM 2 PM
As the only auction house and gallery in the Czech Republic, it provides a lifetime guarantee of authenticity for sold artworks.
In 2021, the company Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery took over an extensive and difficult project, the gradual reconstruction of the iconic pavilion EXPO 58 in Letenske sady. "Our ultimate goal is to revitalize this world-famous cultural monument. We would like to return the building to the public and be freely accessible. " The opening of the new Expo 58 ART exhibition hall will take place on the opening day of the pre-auction exhibition on October 29, 2021.
The Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery auction hall will offer several masterpieces from various Czech and foreign collections in its November auction. The most important lots in the auction will be three top paintings by Toyen and a wonderful oil by Frantisek Kupka.
The first iconic work by Toyen SERENADE comes from the author's rare, highly regarded creative period. Toyen created the painting in the years 1924 - 1925, paintings from this "naive" period are very rare on the market. The expert of Toyen, Dr Karel Srp commented on the discovery of this important work, which was last presented at an exhibition in 1926 in Paris, saying: "This is the greatest discovery of this year ..." The starting price of the painting is very interesting for collectors and investors and was set at EUR 400 000.
The second major work of Toyen in this auction is the canvas RESPIRATIONS DU SOMMEIL. This painting was created by a painter in 1958, at a time when she was already fully acclimatizing in Paris. This period (1958 - 1962) is one of her best. The provenance of the painting is also interesting. The work comes from the collection of the world-famous surrealist painter, sculptor, designer and poet Meret Oppenheim. The starting price of the painting corresponds to the significance of the work and is set at EUR 320 000.
Toyen's third work in the auction is an extremely rare erotic drawing from 1932, which comes from the collection of the important collector of surrealism Jean Paul Kahn from Paris and was originally created for the Erotic Revue, led by painter Jindrich Styrsky. The starting price of the lot is EUR 50 000.
An important lot of the auction is also the masterpiece oil ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER MARNE from 1895. The charming work comes from the world-class painter Frantisek Kupka. The painting is a unique example of what Kupka's early works looked like. The work goes to auction with a starting price of EUR 152 000. Another exclusive lot is an abstract work on paper called Etude pour Quatre Histoires De Blanc Et De Noir. This masterpiece of Kupka dates from the years 1925 - 1926, when he was already fully engaged in abstract creation, the starting price is set at EUR 24 000.
The November auction will also offer a number of quality works by excellent painters of the last century from the famous collection of well-known collectors Cyril and Bohuslav Dusek. These are, for example, the works of Antonin Chittussi, Bedrich Havranek, Josef Navratil and Antonin Slavicek. In the past, the collection of paintings by the Dusek brothers was described as the most beautiful private picture gallery of Czech painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The auction will also include rare works by Josef Sima, a prominent figure of Czech fine art of the 20th century. This is, for example, the exceptional LANDSCAPE from 1957. The exclusivity of the work is evidenced by its exhibition in the prestigious foreign gallery Paul Faccheti Paris. The starting price of the painting corresponds to the significance of the work and is set at EUR 56 000.
Another important work by Josef Sima is brilliantly executed painting COLD SUN (New York) from 1965.
