The Vaclav Spala Gallery is about to host a new exhibition of virtuosic and shocking works by the extremely talented young Czech artist Jan Gemrot, which are of great interest to the public, experts and collectors. The exhibition bears the unusually mystical title STARDUST, which is understood literally as the dust issuing from the explosions of supernova. Permeating the solar system, this dust is contained in everything, including every object and person that has ever existed or exists. Thus, each of us carries within ourselves a piece of stardust, as do the works that Jan Gemrot will present in the exhibition, which convey to us an unearthly atmosphere.

Fascinated by the changing context of artworks and their transcendence beyond the earthly and gallery space, Gemrot has placed pieces of ancient sculptures, floating in space, alongside and astronauts or merely parts of their equipment in his canvases. The meaning of the original works, rooted in ancient mythology, is thus taken to an entirely new level of thought and perception. Astronauts are often depicted around these huge pieces of sculpture as little more than tiny figures, exploring, perhaps as scientists of the future, the fragments of these artifacts. Yet what the astronauts are actually doing around the sculptures is left to Gemrot's imagination. In his view, we can never perfectly understand an artist's work. His paintings radiate a sense of the unreal; they have an intense psychological effect on people, and thus transport them to other spheres of viewing reality.

Jan Gemrot (* 25 November 1983) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His unique talent, led to his being allowed to enter this institution in Zdenek Beran's studio after completing his third year at the Vaclav Hollar Secondary Art School. Even during his studies, he already exhibited his works independently. Currently, as one of the leading personalities of the Czech art scene, he is exclusively represented by the leading Prague gallery and auction house Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery from 2020. His unique works will be on display at the Vaclav Spala Gallery from 15 May to 23 June 2024.
