AUCTION OF SELECTED WORKS OF ART - EXPO 58 ART EXHIBITION HALL - 2PM ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2021
Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery is the only auction house and gallery in Czech Republic that provides a lifetime guarantee of authenticity for all works of art offered at its auctions.
In 2021, Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery embarked on an extensive and difficult project, the gradual reconstruction of the iconic pavilion EXPO 58 in Letenske sady. ‘Our ultimate goal is to revitalize this world-famous cultural monument. We would like to return the building to the public and make it freely accessible.’ The opening of the new Expo 58 ART exhibition hall will take place on the opening day of the pre-auction exhibition on October 29, 2021.
The Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery next auction will offer several masterpieces from various Czech and foreign collections. Some of the most important lots include three outstanding paintings by Toyen and a wonderful oil painting by Frantisek Kupka.
The first iconic work by Toyen SERENADE comes from the author's rare, highly regarded creative period. Toyen created this painting between 1924 - 1925. Paintings from this so-called ‘naive’ period rarely appear on the market. The expert of Toyen, Dr Karel Srp commented on the discovery of this important work, which was last presented at an exhibition in 1926 in Paris, saying: ‘This is the greatest discovery of this year …’ The starting price of this painting was set at EUR 400 000.
The second major work by Toyen in this auction is the canvas RESPIRATIONS DU SOMMEIL. This painting was created by the painter in 1958, at a time when she was already fully acclimatizing in Paris. This period (1958 - 1962) is one of her best. The provenance of the painting is equally interesting. The work comes from the collection of the world-famous surrealist painter, sculptor, designer and poet Meret Oppenheim. The starting price of the painting reflects the significance of the work and is set at EUR 320 000.
Toyen's third work offered at the auction is an extremely rare erotic drawing from 1932, which comes from the collection of the important collector of surrealist art Jean Paul Kahn from Paris and was originally created for the Erotic Revue, led by painter Jindrich Styrsky. The starting price is EUR 50 000.
Another important lot is the masterpiece ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER MARNE from 1895. This charming work was painted by the world-famous artist Frantisek Kupka and is a unique example of his early works. The painting’s starting price is EUR 152 000. Another exclusive lot is an abstract work on paper called Etude pour Quatre Histoires De Blanc Et De Noir. This masterpiece of Kupka’s dates from 1925 - 1926, when he was already fully engaged in abstract creation, and the starting price is set at EUR 24 000.
The November auction will also offer a number of high-quality works by a number of excellent painters of the last century from the famous collection of the well-known collectors Cyril and Bohuslav Dusek. These include Antonin Chittussi, Bedrich Havranek, Josef Navratil and Antonin Slavicek. The collection of paintings owned by the Dusek brothers has previously been described as the most beautiful private picture gallery of Czech painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The auction will also include rare works by Josef Sima, a prominent figure of Czech 20th-century fine art. This is, for example, the exceptional LANDSCAPE from 1957. The uniqueness of this work is evidenced by its inclusion in an exhibition at the prestigious foreign gallery Paul Faccheti Paris. The starting price of this painting reflects its significance and is set at EUR 56 000.
Another important work by Josef Sima is the brilliantly executed painting COLD SUN (New York) from 1965. Professor Jaromir Zemina remarked: ‘The painting was created at a time when Sima created paintings that were amongst the most beautiful ones in his final creative period …’ The starting price is set at EUR 38 000.
The attention of collectors and investors will undoubtedly be also attracted by a number of additional unique works by artists including Jiri Georg Dokoupil, Bela Kolarova, Jiri Kolar, Joan Miro, Jan Zrzavy, Olbram Zoubek, Ludek Marold, Antonin Hudecek, Julius Marak, Karel Spillar, Frantisek Tichy, Emil Filla, Oldrich Blazicek, Frantisek Zenisek, Adolf Born, Milos Jiranek, Bedrich Feigl, Adriena Simotova, Kveta and Jitka Valova, Jiri Hilmar, Vladimir Boudnik, Magdalena Jetelova, Kristof Kintera, and many others.
